My Invitation

Are you one of those people who loves to go to the Races and enter the Best Dressed Competition ? I certainly am, so you can imagine my delight when I received an invitation to the Launch of the Style Awards at Newmarket Racecourse. The Moet and Chandon July Festival and the Dubai Future Championships Festival in Autumn both run competitions to find the Best Dressed Lady, Man and Couple on consecutive days and this is usually hotly contested among the Racegoers. Racing and Style seem to go hand in hand and these competitions, coming with very desirable prizes, draw many entries from far and wide.

After being selected last Summer as one of the Top Ten Best Dressed Ladies at the July Festival and in previous years for the Autumn Festival, I was pleased to be invited to the Launch of this year’s Style Award’s. As a Blogger specialising in Style and Fashion, with a special interest in Racing Fashion this Event was right up my street.

What I Wore to the Event

My first decision was what to wear. The Dress Code on the Invitation was Smart/Casual and I was told by the Race Course Coordinator that many would come in standard business attire. With this in mind I decided to err towards more smart than casual, choosing this beautiful dress by Ted Baker, teamed with black block heel sandals from New Look. To make the outfit more casual I chose this cute little mini bag from Topshop with its interesting chain strap.

The Event was held in The Rowley Mile’s Hong Kong Suite an elegant venue which can also be hired for Weddings. We were greeted with a glass of Champagne  and various delicious canapes and spent time initially mingling with other guests.

The Resident Milliner

One highlight of the evening was looking at the hats by Ana Bella Millinery, who I learnt was the Resident Milliner for the Style Awards. As a winner of the Best Dressed Lady in July 2017, she was then invited to help judge in subsequent competitions and has in fact judged me on two occasions. Her hats are quite unique and would complement any outfit for the Races.

Sponsors and Prizes

We also looked at the perfumes of one of the sponsors – Penhaligon, sampling different perfumes in their range. This perfume is favoured by the Royals and supermodels like Kate Moss and Sienna Miller and I can see why. No doubt winners of the Style Awards will win a bottle of their perfume – one is already featured in the raffled prize featured in this month’s Velvet Magazine (media partner for the event). This prize is for anybody who enters and is an amazing prize, so it’s well worth entering.

What’s New for the Style Awards

The Style Awards were officially launched with a speech, where we found out that this year, together with new branding, that there would be a new prize for the person wearing the best hat. This should be of interest to Milliners and people who particularly love hats. New Sponsors were announced as Penhaligon and Porsche with more sponsors to be announced soon.

Later I met Alice Ryan, Velvet’s Senior Editor, who I had seen before judging at the Style Awards. It was a treat to just spend time sharing our love of pleated skirts, wrap dresses and style in general at the event. She introduced me to Rohiny Belani, Velvet’s contributing Fashion Editor and we too shared our love of local independent shops .Velvet Magazine also handed out a goody bag full of delicious and delightful treats to take home.

After taking some pictures for my blog and Instagram, we left, fully inspired to sort out our outfits for Ladies Day in July and buying our tickets soon.

Are you going to enter the Style Awards this year? If so I’ll see you there.

Until next time,

Jill Gregory – My Timeless Style
